Even though institutionalized racism ended two decades ago in South Africa, most of Cape Town’s citizens still operate within segregated and separate shells, be it in social, economic or religious terms. Practical steps therefore have to be undertaken to reduce this lack of effective interaction amongst Cape Town’s cosmopolitan population so that a harmonious co-existence based upon mutual respect and genuine friendship can become the reality. This bottom-up campaign will afford ordinary people the opportunity to learn more about their fellow Capetonians and sow the seeds of true friendship and individual esteem.

The launch of Harmony, Cape Town’s interfaith network is a new grassroots effort to bring together the city’s various faith groups so that they may get to know each other through respectful dialogue and meaningful friendship. This multi-faith organisation embraces the entire spectrum of philosophical and religious beliefs from Atheism to Zoroastrianism and seeks to generate genuine understanding and tolerance of all creeds. Harmony will not evangelize or proselytize but will actively embrace and welcome everyone to its fold. It is a pro-active network to foster genuine dialogue and friendship across the religious divide.

A dynamic multi-faith committee reflective of the religious diversity of the Western Cape will be established whose task it will be to coordinate annual events and gatherings that will permit all people of faith to come together and celebrate what connects and not what separates them. In this pragmatic and consistent fashion, Harmony will contribute to making Cape Town a better place for everyone. God-willing, Deo Volente, Inshallah
